It seems more and more celebrities are embracing an all-natural and organic lifestyle, shunning those beauty companies that test on animals or use non-vegan ingredients. Superstars such as Natalie Portman, Gisele Bundchen, Miranda Kerr and Gwyneth Paltrow are all natural beauty devotees, and most of these have gone on to launch their own collection of natural and organic products.
But what is the fuss all about? Why are they so concerned with using only natural ingredients? What does it even mean to be toxin-free? Here are some reasons why you should consider introducing natural products to your salon.
They don’t make us ill...
Studies have shown that we ingest a percentage of every chemical that we put on our skin. These chemicals, in the form of sulphates, phthalates and parabens, to name a few, work their way into our bodies and cause havoc. Our internal systems work overtime to remove these toxins, but this makes us feel sluggish and tired. That 3pm slump that leaves you reaching for the biscuit tin could well be caused by your chemical-laden lipstick, or your toxic shampoo. And then there is the C-word. Could our cosmetics really be causing cancers? Just think back to deodorant-gate a few years ago. Yep, these man-made products are causing cell mutations that could be killing us!
They provide undeniable health benefits...
So now you know why you shouldn’t use mass-produced mainstream products. This is why you should use natural products. Most of them provide benefits that go beyond what you expect them to do. Natural lipsticks are made with nourishing ingredients that help moisturise the lips. Cleansers usually come complete with moisturising or anti-ageing ingredients, and shampoos feed the scalp to help your hair grow longer and stronger, whilst also cleansing.
They don’t hurt animals...
Most people don’t worry too much about where their products come from, or how they were produced, but branding yourself as a salon that cares about animals and the environment shows that you are a salon with a heart. And those that have a strong opinion on the subject will always come to your salon.
You can make more money on the retail side of your business...
Natural and organic products do cost more to purchase, but you can pass this price onto the customer, who will be happy to pay for a premium service. Inform yourself on the various health benefits of each product that you use, and then be sure to stock a range of home-use products. These are hard to find on the high street, and so you will build up a loyal clientele who will know to only come to you for toxin-free treatments.

5. Insect Repellent
For some reason, most bugs hate the smell of coconut oil. Cover yourself in the stuff and benefit from softer skin, and protection from mozzies. Even head lice recoil at the scent of coconut, so it can be used as an effective way to get rid of nits and prevent them coming back. If it’s too late, and you are always covered in bug bites, coconut oil can soothe the area.
6. Oil Pulling
Many celebrities swear by oil pulling, and although it can seem a bit strange at first, you will benefit from whiter teeth, stronger gums and a plaque-free smile. Swish the oil around your mouth for twenty minutes and then spit. Everyone will wonder where you got that fabulous smile.
