6 Tips for Opening your own Beauty Business

Running your own salon is the ultimate dream for many professionals working in the lucrative beauty industry.

The freedom of being your own boss and calling the shots is a tempting notion for many beauty therapists.

But be warned all you budding entrepreneurs, it’s going to take a lot of hard graft, patience and steely determination to make your beauty salon a success in this very competitive environment.

We can’t guide you every step of the way, however we can get you off to a flying start with these helpful pointers on the key ingredients to opening your own beauty salon.

Maybe you’ve decided this is the year you are going to take the plunge and go it alone or perhaps it’s still a faint idea rattling around in the back of your mind…whenever (or if ever!) you decide the time is right to launch your beauty enterprise, let our round-up of essential pointers get you on the road to success:

1. Are you ready to run your own business?

Before you start thinking about the nitty-gritty of finance, business plans and deciding the décor of your new premises, think long and hard about the reality of opening your own salon. We don’t mean to sound harsh but not everyone is suited to the long-hours and tough slog required to become a successful salon owner. You might be a brilliant therapist and love your job but are you are ready for the sleepless nights (well, in the early days anyway) that come with being the head honcho?! Speak to as many business owners as you can, discuss it with your loved ones and weigh up the pros and cons before. If you are still not put off the idea, then let’s get this ball rolling!

2. Finance

Unfortunately, this is one of the most stressful but necessary parts of the whole ‘starting a business’ roller-coaster. How are you going to pay to get this thing off the ground? If you still have your First Holy Communion money sitting in an account and can bank-roll a start-up off your own steam, then hats off to you – we salute your saving ability! But if you are like us mere mortals and need to avail of some financial assistance the crucial thing here is to shop around and research your options. Go with a feasible loan arrangement that you feel comfortable with.

3. Location, location, location…

We know you’ve heard that old saying once or twice before but that’s because it’s very, VERY important! Spend time choosing the right location and you will vastly improve your chances of succeeding.

4. Choose a business model that works for you

Decide how you are going to position your salon and what you can market that makes it different from the rest. Are you a wax bar, a day-spa, a make-up and nail studio? Put the effort into analysing your target market and then provide a service that meets their needs.

5. Get Promoting

When the time is right and you are set to launch your business to the world then start shouting about it from the rooftops (or social media will do fine!). In our modern world of Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest it has never been easier to self-promote your services. For more on growing your business check out this blog post

6. Hard Work Reaps Rewards

Do not for one second think this is going to be easy. You have to work on it constantly. And it’s rare a business-owner gets to clock-off at 5pm. But (we’re not all doom and gloom!) if you put in the time, effort and dedication then you will enjoy the benefits of running your own show.
